Chapter Thirteen

When Tyler asked Mama why she was packing up so much stuff for the journey to Key West, she said, "We have to be prepared... for whatever happens."  What do you think she meant by that?  Why are they taking so much stuff with them?

Chapter Nine

Tyler is in a tough spot now.  The plume hunters might find Tommy's and his secret place and wipe out all the birds.  Furthermore, he's pretty much trapped.  What should he do?  What can he do?  Please provide a detailed, yes, I said detailed explanation of your thoughts.

Do you agree with Mr. Strawbridge's rationale for killing plume birds?  Please explain yourself with detailed support.

On these pages, after Tyler questions him, Mr. Strawbridge defends his decision to kill birds, explaining how and why it is different from what the plume hunters do. How does he claim it is different, therefore making it okay to do?

Chapter Eight

On page 82, Mr. Strawbridge says to Tyler, "Between the dredging and the hunters, I'm afraid the days of the plume birds are coming to an end, just as the days of the dinosaurs had to end.  In the face of that, Tyler, is what I did this afternoon really so terrible?"

If you were Tyler, how would you have answered him at that moment?  Please be clear and specific in your response.

On page 81, Mr. Strawbridge says to Tyler, "You see, where people go, their needs and desires come first.  Alligators, plume birds, panthers, mosquitoes -- they have no place in civilization"
